The Lost Lamp

1st Grade · Step 4 of 5 — More vowel teams

Before you read · about 2 minutes

This story practices more vowel teams: ou and ow (out, now) (out), oi and oy (voice), au, aw and augh (hauled), a after w (water, swan) (warm).

Watch for using the other sound for ow (cow and snow). Try both sounds; pick the one that makes a real word. Words to watch: out, down, mouse, ouch, crown.
Watch for sounding o and i separately. Point to oi or oy together: one sound, as in boy. Then blend. Words to watch: voice, oil, soil, coin, joy.
Watch for sounding both vowels (reading rain as 'ra-in'). 'These letters work together to make one sound.' Words to watch: hauled.

Tap one finger for each sound, then blend the word.

Say the word. Tap the sounds you can sound out. Point to the tricky part (♥): that's the part to learn by heart. Say the word again.
