What's new in this story

This story practices all the letter sounds and first blends: x that says /ks/ (box), words that end with two consonants (and), the letter h (hops), words that start with s and another consonant (slips).

Watch for

Watch for reading x as one sound (it says two: /k/ /s/). Say /k/ /s/ together for x, then blend: f-o-x, fox. Words to watch: box, fox.
Watch for dropping the last sound (reading lamp as 'lap'). Ask, 'Is there one more sound?' and point to the last letter. Words to watch: and, jumps, rests, soft.
Watch for saying the letter's name instead of its sound. Point to the letter: 'What sound does it make?' Then blend the word again. Words to watch: hops, hot.
